I've been paid a couple of times, but I recognize that it's extremely hard for lit mags to make enough money to do that. And if I don't pay anything to submit, it's even more unlikely that they'll have the funds to pay me. I see any money that I might get for my writing as a bonus. I don't think I've ever been under the illusion that writing would make me much money, and that's okay with me. I think every writer needs to be realistic about that; if you are worried about profits, then business writing might be a better fit for you.
