I did this trip once to Kayenta, Arizona. Or, really, we went to Kayenta (a pretty small, isolated town already) and then drove six hours straight into the desert. Fell asleep super disappointed with cloud cover, but at 3am or so our tent almost blew away and in the chaos of securing it I looked up and the stars were just... indescribable.
