As a freelance writer, I believe so strongly in working with folks who value what you create (by which I mean, who pay you decent rates for your work). But I find that I apply this standard primarily to my journalism and my copywriting work. When I'm paid for a more literary piece, I consider it a delightful surprise. It's an uneasy tightrope to walk. But it's one I've grown used to because my reasons for doing each of these disparate types of writing vary.
