There have been a variety of studies over the last few years about how a lot of smaller liberal arts colleges are basically slowly going out of business. "Slowly" measured in a span of 10 or 20 years, but trending that way. A common administrative response is to double down on college sports - for the $$$ that brings in - and push for more vocational and STEM-oriented programs, since that helps job placement numbers. The arts, especially writing journals, are easy targets in a budget crunch.
