As a journalist, I always felt that the fact that I was able to target a specific editor was a sign that I'd done my homework and familiarized myself with the publication. In the lit mag world, if I know which editor I'm targeting, I do the same. As an editor at a lit mag, I know I appreciate it. It's not always possible, though. So if I can't find a specific editor, I don't address my letter to the EIC. Rather, I write, "Team [LIT MAG]"
