I'm probably just repeating what everyone says, but The Magic Flute is a masterpiece, I think - aside from the famous arias - because there's so much flexibility in how it can be staged and interpreted, yet stay a classic.
I mean, there are a few that I would not suggest without knowing what you're getting into ... Wagner, in particular.
I once sat through a 4+ hour performance of Tannhäuser and that was like running a marathon just to get through.
