I'd say talk to that editor or reader. The magazine might have a policy where an editor/reader isn't allowed to read a submission if they know the author (unfair advantage, conflict of interest, and all that). They might also have a policy where all submissions have to go through the same channel. If neither is the case, then sending it directly to the editor/reader you know likely wouldn't be a problem.
