the last one i used seems to have shut down or expired (i think he was called Carl?) but there's bots you can set up that will automate self-assign roles! (Best done in its own chat-locked channel for accessibility.) The mod role would obviously be separate, self-assign roles are just for ID (lots of servers do pronouns here, good for collecting demographic info like time zones too) and notifications (so I can ask all the poets a question w @poets, but only the ones that have added the role) and usually don't come w unique privileges. (Sometimes there's like a NSFW channel available for people w a self-assigned 18+ role, but I can't think of a version of that we would need here rn)
